Florence - June 6

Beautiful run across the Arno today to explore the beautiful park/terrace I have admiring from a distance.  The views looking back towards the Duomo did not disappoint.

I had an 8:30 appointment for Uffici Gallery with the plan to make the visit and be back before the kids were up.  They are still on US time a bit, staying up late and sleeping until lunch :)

Uffici was really amazing.  I used the Rick Steves podcast through my phone and was able to slowly meander through the rooms appreciating the works of art.  Reading Walter Isaacson's Leonardo DaVinci book at the moment gave me a better perspective on the evolution of the amazing Italian artists of the ages and critical role the Medici family played.

Two big things happening with the rest of the day - first Uncle Troy and Carolyn are arriving today!  Secondly, Caden is getting the tips of his hair bleached to fulfill a promise made to let him try this over the summer since he cannot have dyed hair at SJGS.  Lily, Caden and I headed to the "Grafiti Hair Salon" while Corey and Gia went to meet Troy and Carolyn at the train station.

Caden was soooo excited!

 Ta-Da!  We all love it!

We bought our own painting supplies and enjoyed some watercolor painting in the afternoon.
Uncle Troy, Carolyn and Corey headed out to explore the city...

 - so the kids and I decided to try and find the best crepes in Florence.  We found gelato instead.  The "Niro" kind - both chocolate and caramel, has my vote.

Tragically hip children outside of our apartment door in Florence.

We had dinner reservations at l'Tuscani 3 last night for one of the infamous Florence steaks.  But first the preparation...  Gia has a mosquito bite on her eyelid, so she wanted to wear her sunglasses + her new rainbow scarf.  Watch out Italy!

On our way to dinner...

Our window into the kitchen...

Out Flintstone-like platter of food.  We have a lot of leftovers!
This was followed by a ridiculous amount of grappa, which we felt compelled to vigorously sample following our two bottles of house wine - that was included in the meal.  Oye.  While we sampled our grappa we chatted with a lovely couple from Ireland - Hilary and Mary (Hilary was a guy).

PASTICCHE on the steps
(which translates to goofballs)

And yes, we managed to fit in one. more. gelato.  Ugh!  This photo was taken before we were all covered in it.  Grateful for a washing machine at our apartment.
