Croatia - Day 10

I was up early (4:30 AM 😔) and the temps were 77 already and were expected to reach 90 by 8! So after reading a bit I tried to rally a troop to join me in a bike ride before the temps were miserable. I started trying to guilt Corey. To no avail. Then Caden, who just stared at me with his big brown eyes and did not answer my invitation. Then Lily, who sweetly was apologetic, saying she wanted to join but was too tired. I knew better than to try Gia!

I had a beautiful morning exploring the little town by bike.

I ventured up to the top of the hill across the bay. So fascinated by these stone walls that are literally heading up and across every hill. So curious why, who and how...so I tried something called Google:) Apparently they have been built over the centuries by farmers to create usable farm land, keep in livestock, and create property boundaries. I can't imagine how hard it must have been!

The hill up was crazy steep, but the views were so worth it. There were some cute little cottages and old buildings around. Definitely a good place to rent if you want some quiet!

The road back down...it was a lot steeper than it looks!

Did a little grocery shopping on the way home. So love how seriously Europeans take their fresh baked bread. Still warm, crisp on the outside, and the best thing you've ever tasted - for under 2 Euro!

One home I had a swim and second coffee - and lucked out to see the fishing boats return! So cool seeing them get pushed in by little tug boats :)  The trucks backed onto the little dock and were loaded within an hour and then off to deliver fresh fish to all of the good little restaurants in the area.

There was a guy selling the fish right at the dock, so we ventured down to buy some. We initially said we would take 12, which he semed generally surprised by. So we asked how many we should get. He says he eats 20 at a time. We settled on 30 - which cost 3 Euro. I could live on these anchovies and the fresh bread and spend less than 5 Euro per day!

We asked how many mornings he would be there selling fish and he said until the full moon when the fish can see the reflection of the boat and you can't catch anymore. Who knew?!?

Before (above) - and after (below). He showed us how to pinch the heads off and pull out the inards. Luckily chef Corey took that on. Intentionally not making that photo as big as the others 😝 But boy were they delicious!

We did some cider sampling at lunch too.

Just before lunch, Lily, Caden and I did some kayaking and SUP-ing? around the bay. The wind was crazy sting so it toom about 10x longer to get back.

Watched the movie Shark Whisperer (all in on the ocean today) and then the kids went to diner - which I so love - and Corey and I went for ice cream. Definitely an opportunity for a gelato shop in town!!

Goodnight!
